    Group Session Template

Design Your First Group Hypnotherapy Session

    How to Use This Template

This template provides a structured framework for planning and facilitating a group hypnotherapy session. Fill in each section with your specific content, timing, and protocols. Use it as a starting point — adjust based on your group size, theme, and participant needs.

    Session Planning

    Session Theme

[e.g., Stress Release, Inner Confidence, Letting Go, Creative Visualization]

    Target Audience

[e.g., general wellness seekers, corporate team, therapy group, retreat participants]

    Group Size & Duration

    [e.g., 8–12 participants, 90 minutes total]

    Room/Environment Setup

[e.g., circle seating, dim lighting, ambient music, blankets available]

    Phase 1: Opening (15 min)

1.Welcome and introductions — set the tone (warm, safe, non-clinical)
2.Explain what group hypnotherapy is and isn't — normalize the experience
3.Review ground rules: confidentiality, respect, right to pass, comfort signals
4.Guide a brief centering exercise to transition the group into receptive mode
5.State the session intention clearly — connect it to participant goals

Phase 2: Group Induction (20 min)

1.Use a universal induction (progressive relaxation or breath-based) that works for varying trance depths
2.Include pacing language that accommodates different experience levels
3.Deepen with a guided visualization aligned with session theme
4.Use permissive language — 'you may notice...' rather than directive commands
5.Build in check-in moments using ideomotor signals (finger lift) for the group

Phase 3: Therapeutic Content (25 min)

1.Deliver suggestions, metaphors, or guided imagery aligned with session theme
2.Include open-ended elements so each participant can personalize the experience
3.Layer in resource-building suggestions (safe place, inner strength, calm anchor)
4.Monitor group energy — adjust pacing if you notice restlessness or emotional intensity
5.Allow brief silent processing periods between suggestion segments

    Phase 4: Emergence & Processing (20 min)

1.Guide gentle group emergence with counting and reorientation cues
    2.Allow quiet re-adjustment time — don't rush into discussion
3.Invite voluntary sharing (never mandatory) — 'What did you notice?'
4.Hold space for emotional responses without trying to 'fix' or interpret
5.Normalize varied experiences — some people go deep, others stay light, both are valid

    Phase 5: Closing (10 min)

1.Summarize the session theme and reinforce key takeaways
    2.Provide a self-care recommendation for the next 24 hours
3.Share any take-home resources (audio recording, journal prompt, anchoring technique)
4.Thank participants and invite them to future sessions
5.Be available briefly after for anyone who needs individual support

    Safety Considerations

    • Screen participants for contraindications before the session (intake form or brief check-in)
    • Have a plan for managing abreactions in a group setting — know how to attend to one person without disrupting the group
    • Keep group sizes manageable (8–15 is ideal for therapeutic groups)
    • Ensure confidentiality agreements are in place before the session begins
    • Have water, tissues, and grounding tools available in the room
