    Session Structure Checklist

A Repeatable Framework for Every Hypnotherapy Session

    Your Session Framework

Every effective hypnotherapy session follows a predictable structure. This checklist gives you a repeatable clinical framework you can use with confidence — whether it's your first client or your hundredth.

    Phase 1: Intake & Preparation

Review client history and presenting concern
Screen for contraindications (psychosis, active substance use, dissociative disorders)
Obtain informed consent — explain what hypnotherapy is and isn't
Set session intention with the client
Assess readiness and address any fears or misconceptions

    Phase 2: Induction

Choose induction method based on client preference and presentation
Guide progressive relaxation, eye fixation, or conversational approach
Deepen trance state using counting, staircase, or body scan technique
Verify trance depth with ideomotor signals or verbal check-in
Establish a safe word or signal for the client to use if needed

    Phase 3: Intervention

Deliver therapeutic suggestions aligned with session intention
Use appropriate protocol (suggestion therapy, parts work, regression, resourcing)
Monitor client responses — verbal cues, facial expressions, body language
Navigate resistance with pacing and reframing language
Apply clinical decision tree: deepen, redirect, or emerge as needed

    Phase 4: Integration

Bridge session insights to waking-state awareness
Reinforce key suggestions with post-hypnotic anchoring
Allow client to process emotions or images that emerged
Connect session themes to real-life application

    Phase 5: Closure

Guide gentle emergence with counting and reorientation
Check in — ask how the client feels and what they noticed
Provide between-session assignment or self-care guidance
Schedule follow-up and set expectations for next session
Document session notes including techniques used and client responses

    Safety Reminders

    • Always screen for contraindications before beginning trance work
    • Maintain scope of practice — refer out when clinical needs exceed your training
    • Never force trance depth — pace to the client's comfort level
    • Have a grounding protocol ready for abreactions or emotional flooding
    • Document informed consent and session notes for every client
