10 Signs You May Have Had a Past Life

Kelly Bearer, MA, LPC, ACHTFebruary 15, 2023

This guide covers past life regression training. In my years as a clinical hypnotherapist and the founder of BHI's past life regression program, I've facilitated hundreds of regression sessions. What I've learned is that whether or not you believe in literal past lives, the experiences that emerge during regression work carry profound therapeutic value. Clients consistently discover insights that help them understand — and resolve — patterns they couldn't access through conventional therapy alone.

Here are ten signs that many people report before exploring past life regression. If several resonate with you, it might be worth exploring what your subconscious has to show you.

    1. Intense Déjà Vu

We've all experienced mild déjà vu, but some people describe experiences that go far beyond a passing sense of familiarity. They walk into a place they've never visited and know the layout. They meet someone and feel an immediate, deep recognition. In clinical practice, I've seen clients who traced these experiences to specific regression material that, once processed, brought lasting resolution.

    2. Unexplained Phobias or Fears

Fears that have no basis in your current life history — an intense fear of water when you've never had a near-drowning experience, or a phobia of fire with no traumatic origin — are among the most common reasons clients seek past life regression. What I find clinically significant isn't the "past life" interpretation per se — it's that working with this material therapeutically often resolves the phobia when other approaches haven't.

    3. Vivid, Recurring Dreams of Another Time

Dreams set in historical periods you haven't studied, featuring unfamiliar landscapes or clothing, speaking languages you don't know — these recurring dreams often carry emotional weight that feels disproportionate to "just a dream." Many of our graduates report that clients who present with these experiences find significant therapeutic benefit from exploring the material in a regression context.

    4. Unexplained Physical Sensations

Chronic pain or physical sensations with no clear medical explanation sometimes correspond to material that surfaces during regression work. I want to be clear: I always recommend thorough medical evaluation first. But when medical assessment finds no structural cause, regression work sometimes reveals emotional or symbolic material that, once processed, allows the physical symptoms to shift.

    5. Strong Connection to Specific Historical Periods

An inexplicable fascination with a particular era — not just casual interest, but a deep, emotional pull — can be worth exploring. Several clients I've worked with found that their fascination with a specific historical period connected to regression material that, once integrated, allowed them to understand current life patterns more clearly.

    6. Immediate Recognition of Certain People

Meeting someone and feeling an instant, unexplainable bond — or an equally inexplicable aversion — is frequently reported by clients who later explore past life regression. In the therapeutic context, what matters is the relational pattern the experience reveals, regardless of its literal origin.

    7. Unexplained Talents or Abilities

Natural proficiency in skills you've never formally learned — musical instruments, languages, or artistic abilities — is another experience that clients commonly bring to regression work. Therapeutically, exploring these gifts often connects to a broader narrative about purpose and self-understanding.

    8. A Persistent Feeling of Not Belonging

Some people carry a deep sense that they don't quite belong in their current life, family, or culture. This isn't ordinary dissatisfaction — it's a pervasive feeling of being fundamentally out of place. In regression work, this experience often connects to material that helps clients understand their sense of disconnection and develop a stronger relationship with their present life.

    9. Strong Emotional Reactions to Unfamiliar Places

Visiting a location for the first time and experiencing overwhelming emotions — grief, joy, fear, or a sense of homecoming — with no apparent trigger. These experiences are clinically interesting because the emotional response is genuine and often disproportionate to the situation.

    10. Memories That Feel Like Yours But Aren't

Perhaps the most distinctive sign: having memories that feel authentic and personal but don't correspond to any experience in your current life. These aren't fantasies or daydreams — they carry the emotional weight and sensory detail of genuine memories.

What to Do If This Resonates

If several of these signs resonate with you, past life regression therapy offers a structured, safe way to explore what your subconscious holds. At BHI, we approach this work from a clinical, trauma-informed perspective — ensuring that whatever emerges is processed therapeutically, not just experienced dramatically.

If you're interested in facilitating this work for others, our PLR training program teaches the clinical depth needed to hold space for these powerful experiences. And if you're simply curious, our free masterclass introduces the broader framework of clinical hypnotherapy that makes regression work both safe and effective.
