The Difference Between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help you to make informed decisions about your mental and emotional health.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a state of altered consciousness in which an individual becomes highly suggestible and open to new ideas and suggestions. During hypnosis, the individual’s focus is heightened, and they may experience a sense of deep relaxation and tranquility. Hypnosis can be used to help individuals overcome negative thought patterns, change behaviors, and manage physical symptoms, such as pain or anxiety.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to help individuals overcome mental and emotional problems. During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will guide the individual into a state of hypnosis and use this state to make positive changes to thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Differences between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

1. Purpose: The purpose of hypnosis is to induce a state of altered consciousness, while the purpose of hypnotherapy is to use this state to help individuals overcome mental and emotional problems.

2. Control: During hypnosis, the individual is in a state of heightened suggestibility and may feel like they have less control over their thoughts and behaviors. In hypnotherapy, the individual is still in control and can choose to accept or reject the suggestions made by the therapist.

3. Evidence base: There is a growing body of research and evidence supporting the use of hypnotherapy for various mental health conditions, while the evidence on hypnosis is more limited.

4. Qualifications: Hypnosis can be performed by anyone, while hypnotherapy should only be performed by a qualified therapist with experience in using hypnosis for therapeutic purposes.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are not the same thing, and it’s important to understand the difference between them when considering therapy. Hypnosis is a state of altered consciousness, while hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to help individuals overcome mental and emotional problems.
