Attachment Styles and Hypnotherapy

Attachment Styles and Hypnotherapy

What is Attachment?

Attachment is defined as a “lasting psychological connectedness between human beings” (Bowlby, 1969), and may be considered interchangeable with concepts such as “affectional bond” and “emotional bond.”

A human being’s first attachment is often established during infancy with the primary caregiver. Attachments of various kinds are formed through the repeated act of “attachment behaviors” or “attachment transactions,” a continuing process of seeking and maintaining a certain level of proximity to another specified individual (Bowlby, 1969).

Because caregivers vary in their levels of sensitivity and responsiveness, not all infants attach to caregivers in the same way.

Attachment styles are hard-wired beliefs and behaviors people develop about relationships with others, based on the relationship they had with their primary caregiver when they were infants.

The 4 Attachment Styles

There are four main adult attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and fearful-avoidant (aka disorganized). The latter three are all considered forms of insecure attachment.

1. Secure Attachment

Secure attachment style refers to the ability to form secure, loving relationships with others. A securely attached person can trust others and be trusted, love and accept love, and get close to others with relative ease. They’re not afraid of intimacy, nor do they feel panicked when their partners need time or space away from them. They’re able to depend on others without becoming totally dependent.

About 56% of adults have a secure attachment type, according to foundational attachment research by social psychologists Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver in the 1980s.

All other attachment styles that are not secure are known as insecure attachment styles.

2. Anxious Attachment

An anxious attachment style is a form of insecure attachment style marked by a deep fear of abandonment. Anxiously attached people tend to be very insecure about their relationships, often worrying that their partner will leave them and thus always hungry for validation. Anxious attachment is associated with “neediness” or clingy behavior, such as getting very anxious when your partner doesn’t text back fast enough and constantly feeling like your partner doesn’t care enough about you.

Anxious attachment is also known as, and it generally aligns with the anxious-ambivalent attachment style or anxious-resistant attachment style observed among children. Some 19% of adults have the anxious attachment type, according to Hazan and Shaver’s research.

3. Avoidant Attachment

An avoidant attachment style is a form of insecure attachment style marked by a fear of intimacy. People with avoidant attachment styles tend to have trouble getting close to others or trusting others in relationships, and relationships can make them feel suffocated. They typically maintain some distance from their partners or are largely emotionally unavailable in their relationships, preferring to be independent and rely on themselves.

Avoidant attachment is also known as dismissive-avoidant attachment, and it generally aligns with the anxious-avoidant attachment style observed among children. Some 25% of adults have the avoidant attachment type, according to Hazan and Shaver.

4. Fearful-Avoidant Attachment (aka disorganized)

Fearful-avoidant attachment style is a combination of both the anxious and avoidant attachment styles. People with fearful-avoidant attachment both desperately crave affection and want to avoid it at all costs. They’re reluctant to develop a close romantic relationship, yet at the same time, they have a dire need to feel loved by others.

Fearful-avoidant attachment is also known as disorganized attachment and is associated with significant psychological and relational risks, including heightened sexual behavior, an increased risk for violence in their relationships, and difficulty regulating emotions in general.

5 Types of Hypnotherapy: Do You Know The Difference?

5 Types of Hypnotherapy: Do You Know The Difference?

One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnosis is that they’re all the same.

And it surprises many people when they find out that there are actually many kinds of hypnotherapies and different techniques for hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is a vast field – wider than most people realize – and it has many branches and sub-branches that are defined by its different applications and methods.

Nonetheless, there are a few main types of hypnosis techniques and approaches to hypnotherapy that you might be interested to know about. It’s important to understand the type of hypnotherapy you are using with clients and to have a clear intention of why you are using that method specifically.

Traditional Hypnosis

Traditional hypnosis is perhaps the most popular form of hypnosis and the type that often comes to mind first when thinking of hypnosis. This type relies on suggestions and commands that are given to you when you’re in a hypnotic state, which can then affect your behavior, thoughts, or feelings about something. Traditional hypnosis is commonly used for self-improvement.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

Ericksonian Hypnosis – named after Milton Erickson (the father of modern hypnotherapy) – is a type of hypnosis that uses metaphors, storytelling, and indirect suggestions instead of direct suggestions or commands. The theory behind this technique is that you are less likely to resist indirect suggestions, which can help you absorb and internalize them better. It relies greatly on your unconscious mind and offers a more organic approach to suggesting change. This type of hypnosis is particularly useful for those who are skeptical of traditional hypnosis.

Cognitive-Behavioral Hypnotherapy (CBH)

Cognitive-Behavioral Hypnotherapy (CBH) draws heavily on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), using a variety of hypnotherapy techniques to create a positive change in your thoughts or behavior. Although there are debates in the hypnotherapy community on its exact definition and nature, it shares many similarities with other types of hypnosis. This form of hypnotherapy uses different psychological tools and factors such as imagination, conceptualization, and suggestion to help you understand whatever issue you’re facing.

Regression Hypnotherapy

Regression hypnotherapy involves a hypnotherapist taking you back to your past with the goal of uncovering the reason for an issue or problem in the present. It involves being guided through your memories and analyzing past events to understand your current state better. This technique requires a highly trained hypnotherapist since some past events may be traumatic and painful to revisit.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

This type of hypnotherapy focuses on evaluating your current situation and deciding how you would like your future to look. It relies heavily on goal-setting and focuses more on finding a solution to a particular issue or problem rather than uncovering its cause/s. This type of hypnotherapy is client-centered, where you take the lead in sessions and your hypnotherapist acts as a facilitator in helping you determine the right solution. It is collaborative in nature, and its success relies on you and your hypnotherapist working together to find the best solutions for achieving your goals.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Although there are disagreements on whether this is a form of hypnotherapy, there’s no doubt that neuro-linguistic programming and hypnotherapy share many similarities. In fact, it is used by many hypnotherapists as a tool for helping a client produce a desired change. NLP explores the relationship between your senses and the way you process language as a way to produce a positive change in your life.

It’s important to know the type of hypnotherapy you are using with clients to be a fully effective hypnotherapist.

Our Meta Hypnotherapy method includes the best from all these types of hypnotherapies described above for a more inclusive, comprehensive, and integral approach to hypnotherapy.

When working with the subconscious mind it is important to have the most up-to-date method and an easy-to-apply approach to be the most effective hypnotherapist.

What is Hypnotherapy?

What is Hypnotherapy?

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a relaxed state of mind in which you have heightened focus and concentration.

When we use this relaxed state of mind for healing in a therapeutic context, this is known as Hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to remove self-sabotaging behaviors, limiting beliefs, and blocks that prevent you from leading your best life – in love, career, finance, health, and so much more.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful therapeutic technique that accesses your subconscious mind through the process of relaxation.

The conscious mind is the 10% of our mind that computes, processes, analyzes, and judges.

The subconscious mind is the other 90% of the mind and is where your feelings, emotions, long-term memory, habits, patterns, beliefs, and behaviors are stored – which makes hypnotherapy so effective. We have direct access to heal your issue at its core.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

With hypnotherapy, we have direct access to your subconscious mind and are able to go to the root of your issue and heal it. Through the process of hypnotherapy, we are able to go to the exact origin of your issue, identify how it is affecting you in your present life, and heal it.

From there, you will learn new tools, resources, and practices to use in your everyday life. Client’s leave the hypnotherapy session feeling lighter, empowered, and ready to create active change in their lives.

How is Hypnotherapy Different from Talk Therapy?

Hypnotherapy is different than talk therapy because in hypnotherapy we access your subconscious mind – which is 90% of your mind. Talk therapy works with your conscious mind – the other 10% part of your brain that analyzes, computes, and discerns. This is why talk therapy is great for processing and hypnotherapy is great for healing.

Hypnotherapy goes both deeper and faster than talk therapy. For this reason, it is my preferred method of therapy.

What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session?

The hypnotherapy session begins with soft, relaxing music and relaxation techniques to take you deep into a state of relaxation. Your eyes will be closed for the majority of the session. You can choose to lie down or sit up, whichever feels most comfortable to you.

You and your hypnotherapist will then dialogue about your issue from your subconscious mind and very much like a guided meditation or a relaxing visualization, you will go through the process of accessing the root of your issue.

Once you discover that, you will remove the old, negative block and replace it with new, healthy ways of being in your life.

Waking Up and Growing Up with Hypnotherapy

Waking Up and Growing Up with Hypnotherapy

The Gifts of the East and the Gifts of the West

One of the great aims of Meta Hypnotherapy is to integrate the split between body, mind, and spirit.

The Great Wisdom traditions of the East focus specifically on the spiritual development of the self through awakening practices such as meditation, yoga, and chanting as a way to connect with the Universe. By accessing these ever-deepening states of consciousness, one is able to experience oneness and even unity consciousness.

While the gifts of the West offer us breakthroughs in science and technology and focus on the psychological development of the ego as a way to self-actualization.

So which one is the right path to follow?

Two Types of Development: Waking Up and Growing Up

For so long, we either focused on our spiritual development (East) or we focused on our personal healing work (West). Never before has there been a time in history where we have the opportunity to focus on both our spiritual development and our ego development at the same time as we do now.

Waking Up is one form of growth and development that we use in our Meta Hypnotherapy process. Waking Up refers to our spiritual development and how our spiritual development unfolds in ever-greater and wider states of consciousness – from Gross, Subtle, Causal, to Non-Dual states of consciousness.

Growing Up is the second form of growth and development that we focus on in Meta Hypnotherapy. Growing up refers to our psychological development from egocentric to ethnocentric to world-centric stages of development.

So what happens when you focus on both your spiritual development and your psychological development at the same time?

You heal and grow faster in both your spiritual development and your psychological development than you would if you only focused on one – which makes this approach more effective and efficient at catapulting you into your next evolutionary phase of growth and development.

Meta Hypnotherapy offers you a map that uses all the known systems and models of human growth—from the ancient shamans and sages to today’s breakthroughs in cognitive science—and distills their major components into 5 simple factors, factors that are the essential elements or keys to unlocking and facilitating human evolution.
